“close to home” reminds us that poverty is a pernicious condition, methodically exhausting the dreams and ambitions of those in its grip. Although I intentionally avoided photographing the neighborhoods inhabitants, the landscape alone raises certain questions. When does one realize they are poor? Perhaps it’s Christmas morning, the first day of school, or on the occasion that he/she comes to the realization that they are associated with societies “other half”. Does the symbol of the crucifix, dotting the landscape, stand not only for salvation, but also as a plea to a system that over time has failed them.
